Do you begin your days with a meditation session, sipping your favorite hot beverage, or scrolling through your phone? Whatever the answer, when you get to look in the mirror and examine your morning self, you probably notice a few annoying folds and creases, most likely from the position in which you slept.
We call this “pillow face,” and sleep is, according to esthetician Renée Rouleau, the second cause of wrinkles after sunlight and UV exposure.
If you had no idea that your relaxing beauty sleep might be the reason for those new lines you observed, continue reading, and find out all about sleep wrinkles, how to prevent them, and how to treat the existing ones.
Does Sleep Cause Really Wrinkle?
We know it’s hard to believe that, while relaxing and regenerating your body, sleep can also produce aging signs. But, it’s true and, according to Debra Jaliman, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist and author of Skin Rules, different aspects of sleep can affect your skin, but there are also ways to slow down signs of aging overnight.
If you are sleeping on your stomach or side, for instance, your face always comes in contact with your pillowcases. And this way, you can end up with sleep lines on your cheeks and forehead.
Without any doubt, wrinkles are the result of the loss of elasticity and collagen. However, the repeated pressure you apply from sleeping with the side of your face on a pillow can promote collagen breakdown, leading to visible lines. But, let’s not forget about the good news and see the ways you can prevent and treat these disturbing sleep wrinkles!
Sleep on Your Back
For many, sleeping on the side or stomach is so relaxing that it will be hard to give up. However, thanks to the lack of pressure applied to your face, sleeping on the back will prevent the aging lines.
Keeping the same position overnight might be difficult at the beginning since you can’t control your involuntary sleep movement, but with practice, you can do it! Your face, neck, and chest will thank you!
Get a Special Pillow & Update Your Pillowcase
While side- and stomach-sleeping might not be totally avoidable, other things can help you prevent sleep lines. According to Dr. Jailman, investing in a NIGHT Pillow is a great way to minimize wrinkles and assist with hydrating your skin cells and supporting clean skin.
Also, we recommend switching from your cotton pillowcase to a silk one. This way, your skin won’t stretch against the pillow but easily slide. And, if you’re worried your pillow will slide through the night, you can opt for one that's silk on one side and cotton on the other!
Keep Your Skin Moisturized!
We talk a lot about moisturizing because it’s a crucial step in your daily beauty routine. We recommend starting with a serum containing vitamin C or hyaluronic acid since they are fantastic collagen production boosters. Then, after you boost collagen with a serum, use a gentle night cream to create a protective layer of moisture.
Don’t forget about your body! Sleep lines are affecting your neck and chest, too. So, apply your moisturizer, especially after showering. While hot showers are relaxing, they can leave your skin very dry, and moisturizers are the solution. You can even use coconut oil instead of your usual body cream for a natural pamper and a healthy glow.
Don’t Skip the Morning Massage & Exercise!
There is nothing better than a gentle, morning massage of the wrinkled areas on your skin. Not only will it make you feel good, but massaging increases blood flow and circulation to the surface of your skin, helping to fill in those sleep lines.
In addition to a subtle message or even skin-tapping, we advise you to exercise in the morning to get your heart rate up. This way, you help pump blood throughout your body and face and, of course, promote circulation to your skin cells.
Get a Full Night's Rest & Use Blumbody Patches At Night
Though different sleeping positions might enable wrinkle formation, there is no doubt that resting and getting enough hours of sleep every night is crucial when it comes to rejuvenating your skin.
Also, to upgrade your nighttime routine, we suggest you add the Blumbody smoothing pads and patches into the game. They act as a non-invasive treatment for all kinds of wrinkles and lines, whether caused by sleeping on your side, aging, sun damage, or facial expression.
Treat your delicate skin with the Blumbody ultra-hydrating patches and pads to wave those sleep wrinkles goodbye and wake up to younger-looking, smoother, and glowing skin!
